March 26, 2010,

Almost there!  We are setting up lambing jugs tomorrow.  All our supplies are in, shots are done, the barn is clean.  All we need now is lambs!

March 10, 2010,

Tough last month; we have had flu in and out of our household.  But still getting ready for lambs!  Cleaning the barn, baby lambs tags came in the mail, spring shots for the ewes, upping the quality of the hay.  Only 25 days

Feb. 7, 2010,

Looking forward to lambing season, so we have added a column of due dates to our chart.  We will be starting the spring vaccinations in the next few weeks, and checking on our lambing supplies for the season.  I love this time of year!

December 6, 2009,

We had a bad run of recycles recently, and so will almost certainly not be getting our usual take rate.  Then we just had three hold their AI pregnancies in a row, so that was more hopeful.  But our cleanup rams are getting plenty of business!

November 27, 2009,

Well, the recycling season has begun.  :-(    Our first ewe recycled today, but so far the ewe AI'ed the same day has not, so I am still, (ever) hopeful!  Thankfully we have three great rams available for cleanup, 305W a polled Ormurson, spotted black, 311W a polled solid moorit Orvarson, and a spectacular horned white Alfur son, 321W.  All three are packed with muscle, with heavy, thel-rich fleeces.  You can see them at  Breeding Ram Flock .

November 6, 2009,

Here is our breeding plan for the 2009 season.  You will see the breedings get dated as the season goes on; so far these are the crosses that are planned.  There is a VAI sire choice in most cases, followed by a farm ram choice should the ewe not catch with the AI.  Some ewe are not scheduled for AI but will go immediately to a farm breeding.  You can read up on our new rams at breeding ram flock 2009  and of course the ewes are described on our breeding ewe page.

                                                                                 ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

DATE

LAMBING DATE                                     NOTES               LAMBS
BLW-202J   Ljomi    11/19/09   04/12/10    Claire is our oldest ewe and looks good!  She looks so good we have brought her back out of retirement, hoping for one more year.  She is a triplet Skjanni daughter, carries solid and spotting.  Ljomi is homozygous white polled with 9 scores on his rump and wool, and 8.5's on neck/shoulder, chest, back and symmetry.  He is a Hnokki son, and his lambs have an excellent composite carcass score of 114, and his daughters are milky. Lambs will be white, but build is very good in both parents, as is milkiness, so this cross is very promising.  We really hope this AI holds as we would love to keep a lamb out of Claire and Ljomi!  Lambs could inherit solid and or spotting from Claire.
BLW-100K

Shannon

BLW-321W   12/01/09   04/24/10 A beautiful, large, deep-bodied and chesty ewe showing her 1/4 Thettir heritage.  Thettir is famous as a father of daughters and  it shows! Outstanding, attentive mother.   Carries solid and moorit, poss. homozygous for moorit.  Her  lambs are always well built.  321W has an amazing build reflecting the muscling score of 120/100 for his sire Alfur. Both parents looks to carry recessives for pattern, so lambs can be color, white, or white carrying color.  Build should be great!  Lambs will be 1/4 Alfur, 1/8 each Grimur and Thettir, plus 1/64 Heli, totals 33/64.
BLW-118K

Bessie

BLW-321W 12/08/09   05/01/10 Bess is a dependably outstanding mother, which she passes on to her own daughters.  She is a Molur daughter with a particularly good leg.   Lambs will be white or possibly gray.  Their AI blood will be 1/4 each Molur and Alfur, plus 1/8 Grimur and a bit of Heli, totaling more than 5/8.
BLW-145K

Athena

BLW-273U   11/19/09   04/12/10 Athena twins reliably, with fat and sassy twins and is our oldest Solee daughter.  She must pass on a moorit color gene as she is homozygous; she also carries solid.   273U was used only for Athena.  He is a Visor grandson out of a Solee daughter, 642N, with a smidge of Heli.  Short-legged with a wide and deep chest and muscular leg.  Lambs can be white or color, in either solid or gray.  This is a linebreeding to Solee, STS-38Z; a daughter to a half-grandson, so lambs will be 3/8 Solee.    Look for lambs with deep chests and VERY strong maternal qualities.
BLW-343L

Magda

BLW-321W   12/01/09   04/24/10 Magda is the most friendly and calm ewe in the flock.   As a Solee daughter, her own daughters are always excellent mothers; she carries solid, moorit and spotting.   321W has an amazing build reflecting the muscling score of 120/100 for his sire Alfur. Lambs will be white or possibly gray or solid.  Moorit is possible.  AI blood will be 1/4 Alfur, 1/8 Grimur plus 1/32 Heli, 13/32.
SRX-58M      BLW-311W  11/16/09  04/09/10 58M is a Dalur daughter and carries solid, dependable mother producing fat and sassy twins with thel rich fleece.   311W is an Orvar son out of our Hnokki daughter 137T.  Also some Heli from 137T, so 311W is 13/16 AI.   Orvar has a conformation score of 87 and 137T is well muscled with particularly good muscle on her rump, leg and shoulders, so no surprise that 311W is perhaps our best ram lamb this year.  Leg packed with muscle, a long and wide loin and a smoothly muscled shoulder.  His fleece is heavy and  packed full of downy thel. Look for really good builds on these lambs, as both parents excel.   Color will be solid, either black or moorit, or white carrying.  Fleece is very promising as both parents are packed with thel.  AI blood will be 1/4 each Dalur and Orvar, 1/8 Hnokki, plus a bit of Heli.
SRX-70M      BLW-305W  11/24/09   04/17/10 70M is a Bambi daughter out of a Blaevar daughter.  305W is 3/4 AI, Ormur on Dalur with a heavy, downy fleece, and very good muscling. Color is definite!  Pattern will be solid, color either black or moorit and spotting possible.  Fleece looks to be great as both parents clipped a heavy fleece.
BLW-403M

Little Red

Olli   11/24/09  04/17/10 Little Red has very good  maternal qualities; she is mothery and milky, just a little more fertility would be great.  1/8 Heli, she carries spotting and gave us an enormous ewe lamb with Lykill in 2008 and a huge Mokollur daughter this year.  Olli has some great scores, including 9's on chest, rump and wool.    9/16 AI, the lambs will be white carrying solid and at least one copy of the moorit gene.
BLW-642N

Millie

BLW-321W 11/27/09   04/20/10 642N, our youngest Solee daughter, is a treasure with guaranteed outstanding lambs.  She is a Heli great-granddaughter.    321W has an amazing build reflecting the muscling score of 120/100 for his sire Alfur.  Lambs will be white or perhaps gray or solid.  Build should be particularly good in the chest as both parents excel in that trait.  AI will be 1/4 Alfur, 1/8 Grimur plus some Heli.
BLW-722P      BLW-321W 12/06/09   04/29/10 722P is a Red daughter and so a dependable mother, plus a Moli great-granddaughter.  She carries moorit and solid and has a good fleece weight.    Mokollur   11/19/09   04/12/10 768P is a dependable mother with fleece packed with thel and fine tog.  She is particularly good in the back, carries spotting, she is homozygous moorit gray.  A great granddaughter of Flotti, and Sveppur and Heli on her sire's side: 3/8 AI.  Moorit gray is a guarantee!  Maternal qualities are strong in both parents, so that will be a real plus.  AI will be 1/2 Mokollur, plus a mix of Flotti, Sveppur and Heli, totaling 11/16.
FFC-465R  Kaekur     11/25/09  04/18/10 213L is a Skjanni daughter out of a Surtur daughter from us, and 250M is a Flekkur son, so 465R is 1/2 AI.  She carries solid, moorit and spotting.   Kaekur has excellent daughter scores for fertility and milkiness.  He carries solid, moorit and poss. spotting. Lambs will be solid, either color, white, or white carrying.  A horned on polled cross; a mistake due to the early morning hour!  AI will be 3/4 with 1/2 Kaekur, and 1/8 each Skjanni and Flekkur.
BLW-821R

Silky

BLW-311W 12/01/09   04/24/10 Silky is broad and chesty, with a silky, shiny, thel rich fleece.  She is 3/8 Dalur and 1/8 Flekkur; outstanding combination.  A Bianca daughter, it shows in her mothering. Lambs will be solid color in either black or moorit, spotting is possible.  AI blood will be 21/32.  Fleece should be particularly good, as it is a very strong trait in both parents.  Maternal qualities as well are very strong on both sides.  This cross looks very promising!
BLW-832R

Beauty

Olli   11/22/09   04/15/10 Beauty is 1/8 each Heli and Flekkur, always a good combination, plus a Solee granddaughter.   She carries solid, moorit and spotting.  Her only fault is a coarse tog, but Olli fleece genetics will help offset that as his fleece score is 9 with plenty of thel. Lambs will be white but may carry solid from Beauty.  AI blood will 5/8, 1/2 Olli, and 1/16 each Heli and Flekkur.  Plus great-grands of Solee, a definite plus!
SWF-208S

FFC-516S

BLW-305W   11/29/09   04/22/10 285M is a Dalur daughter and 462R is an Arfi son; two great polled lines for 516S.  She could carry gray from her sire.  305W is an Ormur son out of a Dalur daughter, so there is some mild line-breeding to Dalur. Lambs could be gray, solid, or white carrying solid and spotting.  Dalur will be 1/4 which is great!  We love our Dalur lines here and he is long gone from the stud station.  There is also Ormur and Arfi, two more excellent polled lines; these lambs are very promising.
FFC-528S   Dokkvi   11/24/09   04/17/10 431R is a Hylur son out of a Sponn daughter, and 723P is a Red Granddaughter from us.  So 528S is 1/4 Hylur, 1/8 Sponn, plus 1/16 of Moli, for 7/16 AI.  She may carry solid and/or moorit.    This is our only Dokkvi pregnancy, so we can't wait to see them.  Lambs could be solid in either moorit or black, or white carrying.  AI will be 1/2 Dokkvi, 1/8 Hylur, 1/16 Sponn and a bit of Moli for more than 11/16.
BLW-908S

Penny

Mokollur     11/23/09   04/16/10 Penny's first lambs last year were outstanding.  She is well built, as were her lambs, they all sailed through  parasite season.  Very strong line for parasite resilience.   11/16 AI, 1/2 Arfi, 1/16 each Flotti, Sveppur, Heli.   Her fleece is outstanding!  Mokollur is solid moorit with particularly strong back score.  His daughters are very fertile and milky, and the wool on his lambs scores well. Moorit!  Either solid or moorit gray.  Great traits on both sides.  Wool should be excellent.  27/32 AI with Mokollur, Arfi, Flotti, Sveppur and Heli - what a mix!
BLW-911S

Bear

BLW-321W 12/04/09   04/27/10 Bear is huge, chesty, full of build with a particularly good back and shoulder.  Her AI lines are 1/2 Muli, 1/8 Morro; Muli gave her a heavy, heavy fleece;  Bear is an enormous ewe.  Lambs will be white carrying, or solid in moorit or black.  White lambs could still be homozygous for moorit under the white pattern.  1/4 each Muli and Alfur, 1/8 Grimur, 1/16 Morro, plus a bit of Heli, totals more than 11/16.
BLW-922S    Hvellur   11/16/09 04/09/10 She is a Kunningi daughter out of a Molur daughter.  Molur was known for a very strong leg and Kunningi for overall muscling and build.  922S is an excellent mother.  Lambs will be white, 7/8 AI.  Build could be really great!  Really excited about some Hvellur lambs, we don't even care about the color.  The muscling scores on his lambs come to a composite of 119.6/100, wow!
BLW-932S     BLW-321W 12/21/09   05/14/10 932S is 1/4 each Arfi and Dalur, 1/8 Buri, total 5/8.  Fleece and mothering are top notch; check out her straight topline.   Carries moorit, poss. spotting.  321W was our cleanup ram this fall, hence the horned on polled cross.  But both parents are some of our best here, so don't discount these lambs!  Color or white, there will be Alfur, Grimur, Arfi, Dalur, Buri and Heli for more than 11/16 AI.
BLW-941S     BLW-305W   11/23/09   04/16/10 941S has an absolutely dreamy fleece and could carry moorit from her dam.  A complex mix of AI lines including 1/8 each Serkur, Flotti and Hnykill, 1/16 Skreppur for an AI total of 7/16.  305W is 3/4 AI, Ormur on Dalur with a heavy, downy fleece, and very good muscling. Lambs come up as 21/32 AI with a great polled mix of Flekkur, Kostur, Heli, Ormur and Dalur, just about all the great polled sires!  Fleece on the lambs should be very thel-rich.
BLW-116T   BLW-228U 11/19/09   04/12/10 Clover is 7/8 AI, 1/2 Ormur, 1/4 Dalur, 1/8 Flekkur and it really shows.  Her fleece is packed with thel.  228U is a wonderful mix of AI lines:  1/8 each Arfi, Dalur, Flekkur and Hnykill, plus 1/16 Buri, all adds up to  9/16.  Definite color, moorit or black, badger or solid, 50% chance of spotting.  Lambs will be 23/32 AI; Ormur, Dalur, Flekkur, Arfi, Hnykill and Buri.  Both parents are blocky and muscular so we are excited about these lambs!
BLW-124T   BLW-321W 12/01/09   04/24/10 124T is 1/2 Kjalvar plus a bit of Moli.  Kjalvar has a strong milk score, plus 9's on his back and rump, wool is 8.  His lambs have a carcass score of 122 when 100 is average.   321W has that wonderful build, reflecting the muscling score of 120/100 for his sire Alfur. Lambs will be white or solid, maybe gray.  Both Kjalvar and Alfur have top-notch carcass scores of 122 and 120.  Remember that these scores are out of 100, so these guys are tops!

Excited about these lambs!  Fleece should be spectacular, pattern will be gray or solid, black or perhaps moorit, 50% chance of spotting.  AI genetics will be 11/16; Ormur, Dalur, Heli, Skjanni, Hnykill, Skreppur and Flotti - wow!
BLW-137T     BLW-305W 12/01/09   04/24/10 An outstanding ewe:  Promising blend of AI lines, 1/2 Hnokki plus 1/8 Heli.  She twinned an a yearling, and all three of them breezed through the parasite season.  Really unusual for dam and twins, when mom is a yearling, so this line is very strong for parasite resilience.  Beautiful fleece, carries solid and moorit.  305W is 3/4 AI, Ormur on Dalur with a heavy, downy fleece, and very good muscling. Lambs will be solid or white carrying solid, moorit and/or spotting possible.   Great mix of top-notch polled sires, 1/4 each Hnokki and Ormur, 1/8 Dalur and 1/16 Heli for 11/16 total.  I have a good feeling about these lambs.
BLW-142T

Wink

BLW-328W 12/04/09   04/27/10 Wink is 1/2 Grimur, plus 1/16 Heli; an absolute tank!  Really flat and broad over the shoulders and back, chest is deep, and rump is that beautiful inverted U.  Nice lamb fleece.   328W was kept as her clean-up ram, he is a Grani son out of a Lodi daughter with a bit of Flotti in her lines.  Lambs will be white, or solid or gray, moorit is possible.   AI is a mix of horned lines, 1/4 each Grimur and Grani, 1/8 Lodi, plus a splash of Heli and Flotti, more than 5/8 total.  Wink's son is our star clean-up ram this year.
BLW-150T   Throttur   11/11/09  04/04/10 Legspot is a result of linebreeding to Solee, reaching 3/8 of our treasured matriarch.  It really shows as she was an outstanding yearling mother, and her daughter 213U is great, great, great.   Throttur is white carrying solid and moorit, excellent carcass score of 124.6!!  Daughters 105 and 106 for fertility and milk. Lambs can be solid, maybe gray?, or white, probably carrying a recessive.  150T is VERY milky so this is a cross of strength on strength for that.  Hoping that Throttur will put a bit more size on the lambs as that is Leg Spot's only flaw, her average size.  Maternal qualities should be great with this cross!
BLW-166T   Bjalki    11/23/09   04/16/10 166T is 1/4 Kari, (explains her spectacular fleece), 1/8 each Heli and Serkur; total 1/2 AI, plus a Solee granddaughter and great, great-granddaughter.    Excellent mother; clearly following in the family tradition.   Bjalki is a Raftur son, a strong recommendation!  His lambs have a composite carcass score of 126.4/100, so very strong.  Maternal qualities are 105 fertility, 111 for milk! Lambs will be solid, possibly moorit, or white carrying solid, moorit and spotting.  Maternal qualities are strength on strength for this cross; really excited about these lambs!
SRX-955T     BLW-311W 11/21/09  04/14/10 955T is a Dalur granddaughter, an Austri great-grand, plus a great-great of Vestri, 7/16 total.   311W is perhaps our best ram lamb this year.  Leg packed with muscle, a long and wide loin and a smoothly muscled shoulder.  His fleece is heavy and  packed full of downy thel.   An Orvar son out of our Hnokki daughter, plus some Heli,  so 311W is 13/16 AI.   Lambs will be moorit, either solid or solid spotted.  AI will be 5/8, with Orvar, Dalur, Hnokki, Austri, Vestri and Heli.  Fleece should have an extra heavy thel as it is a strength of both parents.  Build is very strong on both parents as well.
BLW-200U        Ás   11/20/09  04/13/10 200U is our HUGE Lykill daughter  and is 1/2 Lykill and 1/8 Heli, total 5/8 AI.     Mom is a complete tank and has been since she was born.  Ás is a Snoddison, so he is both a grandson of both Sveppur and Dalur.  Said to have excellent carcasses on his lambs, they score a composite of 112.2/100.  Daughters have a milky score of 121! Really excited about these lambs!  They will be white carrying solid and moorit.  Expect size and build as both parents excel.  1/2 As, 1/4 Lykill, 1/16 Heli, 13/16 AI.
BLW-205U         BLW-321W 12/21/09   05/14/10 205U is our Langidalur triplet with 1/2 Langidalur   and 3/16 Dalur and 1/16 Flekkur, totals 3/4 AI carrying solid, possibly spotting.   321W is all muscle, and should offset the medium size of 205U.   Lambs will be a smidge more than 3/4 AI, 1/4 each Langidalur and Alfur, 1/8 Grimur, plus Dalur, Flekkur and Heli.  Color could happen in either gray or solid pattern.
BLW-210U         BLW-311W  12/01/09   04/24/10 210U is 1/4 Hnokki and Langidalur, 1/8 Rektor and 1/16 Heli, total 11/16.  Could carry spotting.  Strong parasite resilience.    311W is an Orvar son out of our Hnokki daughter 137T.  Also some Heli from 137T, so 311W is 13/16 AI.   Orvar has a conformation score of 87 and 137T is well muscled with particularly good muscle on her rump, leg and shoulders, so no surprise that 311W is perhaps our best polled ram lamb this year.  Leg packed with muscle, a long and wide loin and a smoothly muscled shoulder.  His fleece is heavy and  packed full of downy thel. Lambs will be moorit!   This is a linebreeding to 137T, our star of an Hnokki daughter.    Half sibling to half sibling is the backbone of a linebreeding program, so don't be afraid of this cross.  I'm not and hope to keep a lamb for our own flock.
BLW-213U       BLW-311W 12/03/09   04/26/10 213U is a Mori granddaughter and a Grimur great-granddaughter, 3/8 AI, carrying solid and moorit.  A big, beautiful girl, one of the standouts of her year. Lambs could be solid moorit or white, possibly solid black.  Size and build should be a very strong point with these parents!  So watch this cross for something really good.
BLW-214U         BLW-321W  clean-up   214U is 1/32 each of Flotti, Sveppur and Heli, add in 1/8 each Flekkur and Hnykill for a total of 19/32.
BLW-215U       Kjoi   11/22/09    04/15/10 215U is 1/32 each of Flotti, Sveppur and Heli, add in 1/8 each Flekkur and Hnykill for a total of 19/32.   Kjoi is white polled, with enormous lambs.  His meat scores are outststanding, muscling 111 out of 100, lean is 122 out of 100; wow!  Milky score of 116; his 2-year old mother scores a very high 8.2 maternal score.  Lambs will be white, carrying badgerface or solid, possibly moorit and spotting.  A real strength on strength cross for maternal qualities, plus the top carcass scores of Kjoi, so if these are top criteria for you, then watch these lambs!  A ram lamb from this cross could be a great flock sire for you.  51/64th AI blood.
BLW-230U        BLW-305W 12/06/09   04/29/10 230U is 1/4 Rektor, 1/16 Flotti, plus 1/8 each Flekkur and Hnykill for 9/16 total.  230U must carry badgerface or solid pattern, plus spotting, moorit likely.  305W is 3/4 AI, Ormur on Dalur with a heavy, downy fleece, and very good muscling. Lambs will be 21/32 AI with a rich mix of sires.  Badgerface or solid possible. White lambs would carry solid and spotting.  230U might be homozygous for spotting, so colored lambs will probably be spotted.  Excellent maternal qualities from both parents.
BLW-236U

  BLW-321W

clean-up    236U carries spotting; could carry moorit.  1/2 Blettur, 1/8 Flotti.  She only needed worming once last summer, and not at all this summer.

BLW-239U       ~ BLW-311W   11/19/09   4/12/10 239U is 1/2 Ormur, plus 1/16 each Heli, Sveppur and Flotti, 11/16 AI.   She has size, fleece and color.    Molly has not needed worming this summer with top scores. Moorit or moorit!  Either gray or solid, spotting also possible.
BLW-248U      Bjalki   11/19/09   4/12/10 248U carries solid and moorit from her dam.   She is 1/2 Ljufur, 1/8 each Rektor and Kari, 1/16 Serkur, totals 13/16. Ljufur is a new ram that has really impressive numbers.  He is too young for daughter results yet, but his score is an amazing 86, including 9.0 on his neck and shoulders, back and rump, and an incredible 18.5 on his leg!  Bjalki is a Raftur son so has thick thel and great carcass scores, 118 for muscle, 132 for leanness, totals 126.4/100 - wow! Lambs could be solid moorit, or white carrying.  Solid black possible.  29/32 AI with Ljufur, Bjalki, Rektor, Kari and Serkur.  Build is very promising for these lambs.  A ram lamb from this cross would be an excellent investment as a flock sire.  Strong wool genetics from both parents.
BLW-252U        BLW-311W   12/01/09   04/24/10  311W is an Orvar son out of our Hnokki daughter 137T.
