 November 3, 2009

Our breeding season is about to start, both VAI and natural breeding.  You can read up on the crosses at Breeding 2009.      The rams below are our farm breeding rams that you will see mentioned there.  We have some beautiful homegrown ram lambs, both AI and farm bred, headed for their first breeding season.

(some of the photos are thumbnails, so click to enlarge)

BLW-305W - AI Polled black spotted twin, born to Ormur and SRX-58M.

3/4 AI.   Very excited to add this ram to our breeding pen!  A very fine fleece; (could carry moorit), he has lots of muscle.  Shoulders are smooth and flat,  with a deep leg muscle.   He is Ormur on Dalur, a great combination.  Ormur's wool score is 9 and his overall score is 85.5.  His daughters' milky score is 114; excellent!  That plus the leanness score of 132/100 makes Ormur a great addition to any polled flock.   Dalur is an older AI ram that has had a wonderful effect on the polled genetics, heavy fleeces, excellent mothers, well muscled.

BLW-311W, polled moorit  Orvar son born to our Hnokki daughter 137T.  He also inherits some Heli from 137T, so he is 13/16 AI.   Orvar is all about the build with a ram conformation score of 87!!  He has 9 scores for chest and rump, 18.5/20 for leg, plus a wonderful 9/10 for wool.  The 137T, the Hnokki daughter, is also well muscled with particularly good muscle on her rump, leg and shoulders, so it was no surprise that 311W is perhaps our best ram lamb this year.

Checking his leg muscle, you are almost not able to fit your hand in between his legs; your hand is so completely filled with muscle.  Add a long and wide loin and a smoothly muscled shoulder, and it adds up to a great build.  His fleece is heavy and is packed full of downy thel, so we are really looking forward to his lambs!

BLW-321W, horned white twin born to dam Wink, BLW-142T and Alfur.  Wow!  When I put my hands on this ram I was thrilled!  Muscular and smooth shoulders, wide chest, long loin, wide in the rump, a good deep leg muscle.   Plus lots and lots of white, silky fleece.  Alfur has a 9 score for rump plus and 8.5 for fleece.  His daughters are milky and fertile with scores of 110 and 104 respectively.  His muscling score is 120/100!!  His three year old daughters have a lambing rate of 2.5 so plenty of triplets.

Wink is a tank with a deep chest, a spectacularly broad and flat back, smooth shoulders and a rump in that lovely inverted "U".  WOW!  She looks to carry recessive for pattern and possibly moorit, and with some subtle markings, it looks like 321W does as well.  321W has a scar across his nose from the coyote attacks this spring, so has earned himself the name "Scarface".

Scar is 1/2 Alfur, 1/4 Grimur and 1/32 Heli, totals 25/32 AI blood.

More photos to come!

BLW-228U, polled moorit badger twin born to dam BLW-932S, and FFC-363P.  1/8 each Arfi, Dalur, Flekkur and Hnykill, plus 1/16 Buri, all adds up to great genetics.  AI totals 9/16.  Carries spotting.  932S looks to be one of our rising stars so 228U has great maternal lines.  228U has gone to breed for Le Biscornu farm in Quebec, but did breed one girl here before he left, so looks for his lambs with Clover, our Ormur daughter, 116T.

BLW-273U,  horned white twin born to Millie, BLW-642N and our Visor son 109T.   Both parents carry recessive pattern, Millie solid and 109T, gray, and both carry moorit so there is lots of color and pattern possibilities here.   273U is short-legged but packed with muscle.  Shoulders are good, smooth and well rounded as befits his Visor lineage, leg muscle is deep, and chest is VERY wide.  273U has gone to the farm of Gabriel Fontaine in Quebec, but bred one girl here before he left, his half-aunt Athena, 145K.
