 November 6, 2008

Our breeding season is about to start, both VAI and natural breeding.  You can read up on the crosses at Breeding 2008      The rams below are our farm breeding rams that you will see mentioned there.  We have our beautiful mature badger ram that is returning to the breeding pens, plus some homegrown ram lambs, both AI and farm bred, headed for their first breeding season.

FFC-363P  "Heracles"  A polled black bagerface, single born 5/02/04 to sire AI FFC-250M and FFC-210L.  250M is a Flekkurson and there are not many Flekkur offspring left.  Flekkur was a spotted black with a beefy build and plenty of fleece, so I am happy to be bringing in some new Flekkur blood.  Dam 210L is a triplet Hnykill daughter named Blue.  We are VERY pleased with our Hnykill daughter Juno, BLW-194L, so again it is thrilling to be bringing in some new Hnykill blood as well.  Thanks Elaine!   You can research the lines further at http://www.clrc.ca/cgi-bin/pedigree.cgi?_breedcode=IL&_countrycode=CAN&_association=30&_regnumberprefix=&_regnumber=594406&_regnumbersuffix=

In short, he is 25% Flekkur and 25%Hnykill for 50% AI.

363P has the rich, charcoal thel undercoat that is so wonderful and so rare.  Here are some of his lambs:

BLW-234U, Black/gray Grani son, twin born to BLW-832R.  It is not clear if the flashing at his neck means he carries one recessive spotting gene, or if he IS spotted.  But he definitely carries one spotting gene at a minimum, and definitely carries moorit.  234U's dam Beauty, 832R, is one of our chestiest ewes, a legacy from her mother Snowflake, BLW-07F, who in turn got it from HER mother, Old Solee, STS-38Z.   234U is 1/2 Grani and 1/16 each Heli and Flekkur, totaling 5/8 AI.   Great lines!

Here's his sire, Grani:       and 234U's dam Beauty,

Grani is known for excellent carcass scores on his lambs, muscling 121/100, leanness, 115/100, composite score 117, plus his daughters are fertile, and very milky, scoring 109/100!

Although Beauty is polled, her mother was very horned, and she throws horned lambs.  For breeding ram 234U, three of his four grandparents are horned.

BLW-201U, a horned moorit single, born to a yearling.  His sire is BLW-103T, a son of Mori, and his dam is Monica, BLW-166T so he carries spotting.  201U only needed to be wormed once this summer, very unusual for a lamb born to a yearling, as they otherwise tend to be the most vulnerable to internal parasites.  201U will be used as the breeding ram for our horned ewe lambs as his horns are of a more narrow diameter.  His bloodlines are flawless and we obviously hope that he will pass on his resilience to his lambs.  1/4 Mori, 1/8 Kari, plus some Heli, Morro, Serkur and Sveppur, totals more than 50% AI.

201U will be used to breed our Ljufur daughter, BLW-248U, our Blettur daughter, that jazzy gray, 236U, and our Hvellur daughter from Frelsi Farm, FFC-596U.  They are pictured below in order.  They went into their breeding group on 11/16/08.

              BLW-248U                                        BLW-236U                                  FFC-596U

We have also decided to breed him to 722P, hoping for some twins out of a mature mother.  His parasite resilience was so striking, being a lamb out of a yearling, that we want to stockpile some of his offspring.  Trimmed horns are a small negative weighed against that huge positive!  201U just went in the breeding pen with Beauty, 832R, and those twins should be stocky, can't wait!

BLW-228U, polled moorit badger twin born to dam BLW-932S, and FFC-363P above.  1/8 each Arfi, Dalur, Flekkur and Hnykill, plus 1/16 Buri, all adds up to great genetics.  AI totals 9/16.  228U could carry spotting.  932S looks to be one of our rising stars so 228U will stay to join the ram flock.

BLW-240U, black/gray spotted twin, carries moorit.  Born to Topaz, BLW-768P and AI sire Ormur so he is 1/2 Ormur, 1/16 each Heli, Sveppur and Flotti, 11/16 AI.  240U has scurs, but that is more than outweighed by his size, his long, straight topline, his jazzy color, pattern and spotting, and his long silky curls.

240U is in with the following ewe lambs:  BLW-200U, BLW-214U, 215U, 217U, 218U, 230U, 237U, 252U and 263U.
